Luke 22:31–32
Jesus looks at Peter and says, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat.”
Not humanity. Not the church. You. Simon.
“And the Lord said, ‘Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.'”

He Knows Your Name
The enemy knows your name. Your history. The exact pressure points. The specific weakness he’s been studying for months, maybe years. He doesn’t attack randomly. He demands permission to test you, and he targets the precise place you’re most vulnerable.
This isn’t the first time. In Job, Satan came before God and accused Job of only serving Him because of the blessings. “Strip him of everything,” Satan said, “and he’ll curse You to Your face.” God allowed the test. Job was sifted. His children died. His health collapsed. His friends turned against him. Everything he thought was solid came loose.
But here’s what Job didn’t have. He didn’t have a Savior interceding for him. He didn’t have the Son of God praying that his faith wouldn’t fail. Peter did.
The Sifting Is Violent
The Greek word siniazō means a violent shaking — everything you thought was solid coming loose, the wheat separating from the chaff, the question of what’s real and what was always just performance. Peter had followed Jesus for three years. He’d seen the miracles. He’d heard the teaching. He’d watched the dead rise. He’d confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” He was sure. He was confident. He was certain he’d never deny his Lord.
Then came the sifting. A servant girl asked him a question. “You’re one of His followers, aren’t you?” And Peter denied it. Three times. The shaking was real. The chaff was exposed.
But here’s the weight of the passage. Jesus doesn’t say, “I’ll prevent the sifting.” He says, “But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail.” The enemy’s goal is to turn you to dust. To prove your faith was an illusion. Christ’s goal is to keep your faith from failing. Not to keep you comfortable. Not to keep you from shaking. To keep your faith from failing.
The Priest
In the Old Testament, the high priest bore the names of Israel on his chest when he entered the Holy of Holies. He carried them into the presence of God. Here, the Greater High Priest bears Simon’s name. The enemy brings his accusation. The Son of God brings His intercession.
Wheat, Not Dust
Peter denied Christ three times. The sifting happened. The shaking was real. But his faith didn’t fail — not because Peter held on, but because Christ held on. After the resurrection, Jesus found Peter. He restored him. He recommissioned him. “Feed my sheep.” The sifting produced wheat, not dust.
The cross is the proof that Jesus’ prayers for His people get answered. He prayed for you in the garden. He prayed for you on the tree. He’s praying for you now. Romans 8:34 says Christ “is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” Present tense. Right now.
Sit With It
- Where do you feel the sifting? What’s being shaken loose?
- Does it change anything to know Jesus is praying for you right now? Not vaguely. Specifically. For you.
- Are you trusting your grip on Him, or His grip on you?
Prayer
Father, the shaking is loud. I’m tired. I feel the accusations and my own weakness. But my survival doesn’t depend on my grip on You. It depends on Your grip on me. Thank You for praying for me when I couldn’t pray. Let this sifting produce wheat. Not dust. Hold me. Amen.
