You Are Not an Orphan

"I will not leave you as orphans" — the promise the Father never breaks, and the lie the orphan spirit keeps telling.

Identity in Christ

John 14:18

By Daniel Offin · Kavod Elohim Daily

This is one of the tenderest promises Jesus ever made. And it comes on the night He’s about to leave.

The disciples are reeling. Jesus has told them He’s going away. Peter’s about to deny Him. Judas has already left. The cross is hours away. The resurrection is three days off. The ascension is forty days beyond that. And they’re about to be left in a hostile world, without their Master, without their teacher, without their friend.

They’re about to be orphans.

“I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

John 14:18 · NKJV

The Word

The Greek word for “orphans” is orphanos. It’s the only place in the New Testament where this word is used of the disciples’ relationship to Jesus. It means children without a father. Children without protection. Children without provision. Children without belonging.

Jesus is saying: I’m not going to leave you fatherless. I’m not going to leave you without protection. Without provision. Without belonging. I’m coming to you. And He did. Three days later, He rose. Fifty days later, He sent the Spirit. And through the Spirit, He has been with them — and with us — ever since.

The Orphan Spirit

There’s an orphan spirit in the church. It shows up in believers who act like they don’t have a Father. Who live like they’re on their own. Who worry about provision like there’s no one taking care of them. Who fear abandonment like they’ve been left before. Who perform for approval like they have to earn their place.

This is not the gospel. This is the orphan spirit. And Jesus says: I will not leave you that way.

The orphan spirit shows up in how we pray — begging instead of asking. In how we serve — performing instead of abiding. In how we face the future — worrying instead of trusting. In how we receive love — suspiciously instead of gratefully. All of it is the orphan spirit. All of it is the lie that you’re on your own.

The Promise

“I will come to you.” Jesus didn’t just leave a promise. He came. He came in the resurrection. He came in the Spirit. He comes in the Word. He comes in the sacraments. He comes in the gathering of His people. He comes in the quiet of prayer.

And He has promised to come again. Not just in the Spirit. In person. In glory. To take us to the Father’s house. To end the exile. To bring us home. Between the ascension and the return, we are not orphans. We are sons and daughters. Indwelt by the Spirit. Adopted by the Father. Held by the Son.

The Father

The orphan spirit is ultimately a lie about the Father. It’s the lie that He’s distant. That He doesn’t care. That He’s forgotten you. That He won’t provide. That He won’t protect. That He won’t come through.

But the Father sent the Son. The Father raised the Son. The Father sent the Spirit. The Father adopted you. The Father sealed you. The Father is keeping you. The orphan spirit looks at the Father and sees a stranger. The gospel looks at the Father and sees Abba.

Abandoned So You Would Never Be

Jesus was abandoned on the cross so you would never be abandoned. “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” He cried. He was made the orphan so you could be made the son. He was left fatherless so you could never be fatherless. He was abandoned so you could be held.

The cross is the ultimate proof that the Father will not leave you as an orphan. Because He didn’t spare His own Son to make sure you were never alone.

Sit With It

  1. Where in your life are you living like an orphan? Worrying about provision? Fearing abandonment? Performing for approval?
  2. Do you believe the Father will come through for you? Or are you living like He’s forgotten you?
  3. How does knowing Jesus was abandoned on the cross so you’d never be abandoned change how you face the future?

Prayer

Lord, I’ve been living like an orphan. Worrying. Performing. Fearing. Forgive me. You said You would not leave me fatherless. You came. You sent Your Spirit. You adopted me. You sealed me. You’re keeping me. Teach me to live like a son. Like a daughter. Like someone who has a Father who will come through. I’m not an orphan. I’m Yours. Amen.
