Clean Hands, Pure Heart

The hill of the Lord is not for the casual visitor — but Jesus ascended it so that, through Him, we could ascend too.

Holiness & The Fear of God

Psalm 24:3–4

This is not a suggestion. This is a requirement.

“Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.”

Psalm 24:3–4 · NKJV

Not for the Casual Visitor

The hill of the Lord. The holy place. The presence of God. This is not for the casual visitor. This is not for the half-hearted. This is not for the one who comes with dirty hands and a divided heart.

The question is not “Who wants to ascend?” The question is “Who may ascend?” Who is qualified? Who is permitted? Who is welcome?

And the answer is clear: only the one with clean hands and a pure heart.

The Standard

Clean hands. Pure heart. No idolatry. No deceit.

This is the standard for approaching God. Not partial obedience. Not mostly faithful. Not generally good. Clean. Pure. Undivided.

We fall short. We all fall short. Our hands are dirty. Our hearts are divided. We’ve lifted our souls to idols. We’ve sworn deceitfully. We’ve compromised. We’ve rationalized. We’ve justified.

By this standard, no one may ascend. No one may stand in His holy place. No one may approach the Holy One.

The Problem

We’ve lowered the standard. We’ve said, “Well, no one’s perfect. God understands. He accepts us as we are.”

And that’s true. God accepts us as we are. But He doesn’t leave us as we are.

The standard hasn’t changed. The requirement hasn’t been lowered. The holiness of God hasn’t been compromised. What has changed is the provision. God has provided the cleansing. He has provided the purity. He has provided the way for the unclean to become clean, for the impure to become pure.

The Provision

“Who may ascend?” The answer is not “No one.” The answer is “The one who has clean hands and a pure heart.”

But how do we get clean hands? How do we get a pure heart? How do we become qualified to ascend the hill of the Lord?

Not by our own effort. Not by our own righteousness. Not by our own obedience. By the blood of Jesus. By the cleansing of the Spirit. By the imputation of Christ’s righteousness. Jesus is the One who has clean hands and a pure heart. Jesus is the One who never lifted His soul to an idol. Jesus is the One who never swore deceitfully. Jesus is the One who may ascend the hill of the Lord. And through faith in Him, we share in His qualification. His clean hands become our clean hands. His pure heart becomes our pure heart. His righteousness becomes our righteousness.

The Discipline

This doesn’t mean we can live however we want. It doesn’t mean holiness is optional. It doesn’t mean we can approach God casually.

It means we approach Him with reverence. With clean hands. With a pure heart. With undivided devotion. We confess our sin. We turn from our idols. We reject deceit. We pursue holiness. Not to earn God’s favor, but because we’ve received it. Not to qualify ourselves, but because we’ve been qualified.

The hill of the Lord is not for the casual visitor. It’s for the cleansed. The purified. The redeemed. The ones who have been made holy by the blood of the Lamb.

The One Who Was Qualified

Jesus ascended the hill of the Lord. He stood in the holy place. He entered the presence of the Father. Not because He deserved it less than we did, but because He alone was qualified.

And He did it for us. He ascended so we could ascend. He stood in the holy place so we could stand. He entered the presence of the Father so we could enter. Through Him, we have access. Through His blood, we have boldness. Through His righteousness, we have acceptance.

Sit With It

  1. Are your hands clean? Is your heart pure? Or are you approaching God casually?
  2. What idols have you lifted your soul to? What deceit have you sworn?
  3. How does knowing Jesus is your qualification change how you approach God?

Prayer

Lord, my hands are dirty. My heart is divided. I’ve lifted my soul to idols. I’ve sworn deceitfully. I’m not qualified to ascend Your hill. But Jesus is. And through Him, I am cleansed. Purified. Made holy. Forgive me for the casual approach. Teach me to reverence You. To pursue holiness. To ascend with clean hands and a pure heart. Amen.
