Proverbs 9:10
We’ve misunderstood the fear of God. We’ve equated it with terror. With paranoia. With a cowering before a harsh taskmaster.
But the fear of God is not terror. It’s liberation.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Proverbs 9:10 · NKJV
Freedom, Not Cowering
The fear of God is the recognition that He is holy, sovereign, and good. That He is the Creator and we are the created. That He is the Judge and we are the judged. That He is the King and we are the subjects.
This recognition doesn’t produce cowering. It produces freedom. Freedom from the fear of man. Freedom from the fear of circumstances. Freedom from the fear of death.
When you fear God, you don’t fear anything else.
The Beginning
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Not the end. The beginning. The foundation. The starting point.
You can’t be wise without fearing God. You can’t understand life without understanding who God is. You can’t navigate the world without recognizing the One who made it.
The fear of God is the foundation of all true wisdom. It’s the recognition that reality centers on God, not on us. That His purposes matter more than our plans. That His glory is the ultimate goal of history. When you start there, everything else falls into place. You see your life in proper perspective. You see your problems in proper proportion. You see your fears in proper context.
The Liberation
The fear of God casts out other fears. When you fear God, you don’t fear what man can do to you. When you fear God, you don’t fear what circumstances can take from you. When you fear God, you don’t fear death itself.
Jesus said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The fear of God liberates you from the fear of man. Paul said, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” The fear of God liberates you from the fear of circumstances. The writer of Hebrews said that Christ came “that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage.” The fear of God liberates you from the fear of death.
The Knowledge
“The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” The fear of God is tied to the knowledge of God. You can’t fear Him without knowing Him. You can’t revere Him without understanding His holiness.
This is not a distant, abstract knowledge. It’s intimate. Personal. Relational. You fear God because you know Him. Because you’ve seen His holiness. Because you’ve experienced His grace. Because you’ve tasted His goodness. And that knowledge produces reverence. Not terror. Reverence. Awe. Worship.
The Fear That Delivered Us
Jesus feared God. In Gethsemane, He was “heard because of His godly fear.” He reverenced the Father. He submitted to the Father’s will. He trusted the Father’s goodness.
And because Jesus feared God, He was delivered from the fear of death. He went to the cross not cowering, but trusting. Not in terror, but in reverence. And because He feared God, we can be liberated from fear. Because He satisfied the wrath of God, we don’t need to fear judgment. Because He conquered death, we don’t need to fear the grave. Because He is for us, we don’t need to fear anything else.
Sit With It
- Do you fear God? Or do you fear other things more? What fears dominate your life?
- How would your life change if the fear of God was the foundation of your wisdom?
- Are you living in the liberation that comes from fearing God? Or are you still in bondage to other fears?
Prayer
Lord, teach me the fear of God. Not terror. But reverence. Awe. The recognition that You are holy and sovereign and good. Let this fear cast out my other fears. My fear of man. My fear of circumstances. My fear of death. Let the fear of You be the beginning of my wisdom. Amen.
