Ephesians 1:4
This verse makes people uncomfortable. And it should.
“Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.”
Ephesians 1:4 · NKJV
Before There Was Anything to Recommend You
It says God chose you. Not because you were good. Not because He foresaw you’d choose Him. Not because you were somehow more deserving. He chose you before the foundation of the world — before you existed, before you’d done anything good or evil, before you could earn it or ruin it.
The timing is the point. Before the foundation. Before there was anything in you to recommend you. Before there was anything in you to disqualify you. The choice was made in eternity past, in the counsel of the Trinity, based on nothing in you but the good pleasure of His will.
The Word
The Greek word for “chose” is exelexato — from eklegō, meaning to pick out, to select for oneself. It’s not a passive observation. It’s an active, deliberate, sovereign choice. God didn’t scan the corridors of time, find you, and decide you were worth saving. He set His love on you before time began.
This is the doctrine of election. And it’s not a footnote. It’s the foundation.
The Offense
We don’t like this. We want to believe our salvation depends, at least in part, on us. On our choice. On our faith. On our response. We want to have some say in the matter.
But Paul says no. The choice was made before you existed. Before you could choose. Before you could respond. Before you could do anything to contribute. This offends our pride. It offends our sense of autonomy. It offends the belief that we are self-made. But it’s the only thing that makes the gospel work. Because if your salvation depends on you — even a little bit — you’re lost. You will fail. You will falter. You will choose wrong. The only hope is a salvation that depends entirely on God’s choice, not yours.
The Purpose
“That we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.” Election is not a license to sin. It’s the foundation for holiness. You were chosen for holiness, not apart from it.
The goal of election is not just salvation from hell. It’s conformity to Christ. It’s being made holy, blameless, loving. The choice was made so that you could become what He intended from the beginning.
The Comfort
This is also the deepest comfort. Because if God chose you before the foundation of the world, He won’t unchoose you now. If His love was set on you before you existed, it won’t be undone by your failures. If His choice was based on His sovereign will, not your performance, your performance can’t undo it.
Romans 8:33 asks, “Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect?” The answer is no one. Because the choice was made before time, in eternity, by the God who cannot lie and cannot change.
The Execution of an Eternal Choice
The cross is the execution of that eternal choice. Jesus was “slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). The Lamb was appointed before the world began. And when He went to the cross, He went for the ones the Father had given Him. The elect. The chosen. The ones He loved before time.
You were on His mind at the cross. Not as a possibility. Not as a potential. As a certainty. He died for you because He had chosen you before the world began.
Sit With It
- Does the doctrine of election offend you? Or does it comfort you? Why?
- Are you trying to earn what God has already chosen to give?
- How does knowing you were chosen before the foundation of the world change how you face accusation?
Prayer
Lord, You chose me before the foundation of the world. Not because I was good. Not because I would choose You. Because of Your good pleasure. Forgive me for trying to earn what You’ve already given. Forgive me for doubting a choice made in eternity. I rest in Your sovereign love. I was chosen. I am held. I will not be lost. Amen.
