Revelation 2:17
This is one of the strangest promises in Scripture. A white stone. A new name. Written on the stone. Known only to the one who receives it.
What does it mean?
“To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”
Revelation 2:17 · NKJV
Acquittal, Admission, Belonging
In the ancient world, white stones had several uses. In courts, a white stone meant acquittal. A black stone meant condemnation. When the votes were counted, the white stone declared you innocent. In theaters and arenas, a white stone was your admission ticket. You showed it at the gate and were welcomed in. At festivals, the host would give each guest a white stone with their name on it — a personal invitation, a token of belonging.
Jesus is promising all of this. Acquittal. Admission. Belonging. And a name that is yours alone.
The Name
“A new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” This is intimate. Exclusive. Unrepeatable. The name is not public. It’s not posted on a billboard. It’s not shared in a testimony. It’s between you and Him. A secret known only to the two of you.
In Scripture, a name is not just a label. It’s an identity. It’s a declaration of who you are. When God gives someone a new name, He’s giving them a new identity. Abram becomes Abraham. Jacob becomes Israel. Simon becomes Peter. The name change marks the identity change. Jesus is saying: I’m giving you a new identity. One that no one else can see. One that no one else can understand. One that no one else can take from you. It’s between us.
The Hiddenness
“Which no one knows except him who receives it.” This is the scandal. The world doesn’t know who you are. Your family might not understand. Your church might not see it. Your enemies certainly don’t. But you know. And He knows. And that’s enough.
Your true identity is hidden. It’s not on display. It’s not for public consumption. It’s a secret between the King and the one He’s claimed. This is a massive comfort. Because it means your identity doesn’t depend on anyone else’s recognition. You don’t need the world to affirm you. You don’t need your church to validate you. You don’t need your family to understand you. You have a name. A new name. Written by the Son of God. Known only to you and Him.
The Stone
The white stone is permanent. Stone doesn’t fade. Stone doesn’t erode. Stone doesn’t get lost. Your identity is written in stone. Not in the shifting sands of public opinion. Not in the fragile ink of human approval. In stone. By the hand of Christ.
And it’s white. The color of acquittal. Of purity. Of victory. You are declared innocent. You are declared clean. You are declared an overcomer.
Condemned So You Could Be Acquitted
Jesus was rejected by His own. His name was despised. He was numbered with transgressors. He went to the cross with no white stone, no acquittal, no honor. He was condemned so you could be acquitted. Rejected so you could be welcomed. Stripped of identity so you could be given one.
And the name He gives you is the name of His own. You are called by His name. You belong to Him. And that name — written on the white stone, known only to you and Him — is the name that will outlast every other name you’ve ever carried.
Sit With It
- Whose approval are you seeking for your identity? The world’s? Your church’s? Your family’s?
- Do you believe you have a new name from Christ? Or are you still living under the old one?
- How does it feel to know your true identity is a secret between you and Jesus?
Prayer
Lord, I’ve been seeking my identity in the wrong places. In the world’s approval. In my own achievements. In other people’s opinions. Forgive me. You’ve given me a new name. Written on a white stone. Known only to me and You. That’s enough. I don’t need anyone else to see it. I don’t need anyone else to affirm it. I have Your name. And that’s all I need. Amen.
