God Himself, not an angel or the passage of time,
will wipe every tear from your eyes.
It is worth noticing precisely who performs the action in this verse. Revelation does not say tears will simply stop, or that sorrow will fade with enough time. It says “God will wipe away every tear” — a personal, deliberate act, performed by God Himself rather than delegated to an angel or left to happen naturally. This is not distant comfort offered from a safe theological distance. It is the promise of God’s own hand meeting your face at the exact point of your grief.
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

An Absolute End, Not a Softened One
The list that follows is total, not partial: no more death, no more sorrow, no more crying, no more pain. John does not soften this into “less” sorrow or “manageable” pain. He describes an absolute end — “the former things have passed away,” language that treats current grief not as a permanent feature of reality but as something already scheduled for its own ending, however far off that ending may currently feel.
Real Now, But Not Final
This future certainty is not meant to minimize your present pain, as though the promise of a distant resolution should make today’s ache disappear. It is meant to relocate your heartbreak within a larger timeline — real now, but not final. Your grief is genuinely temporary, even when it does not feel that way, because a day is coming when it will be healed so completely it can no longer reach you. Until then, the God who will one day wipe every tear from your eyes is the same God who, according to Psalm 56:8, is already collecting them.

Some days you will feel progress; other days you will feel like you are right back at the start. That is normal. That is human. God is not keeping score.
Be patient with yourself. Be honest with God. Surround yourself with safe people who will sit with you in the sorrow and speak hope when you cannot find words. The One who bottles your tears, who draws near to the crushed, who anchors your soul, and who promises to wipe every tear is holding you right now.
You are loved. You are seen. And you will not walk this road alone.
